Ngo hiang is essentially a composition of various meats and vegetables and other ingredients. For example, one will find sausage-like roll consisting of minced pork and prawn (or fish) seasoned with five-spice powder after which it is named, rolled inside a bean curd skin and deep-fried, lup cheong, cucumber, century egg, ginger, deep-fried egg, deep-fried beancurd, fishball and many others. These ingredients would be deep fried and served with chili sauce along with the stall’s special sweet sauce.
It is common for stalls in Singaporean and Malaysian food courts and hawker centres sell fried bee hoon or fried yellow mee with ngo hiang. This combination is common for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner. In Indonesia, people enjoy ngo hiang with special sambal sauce.
