Yi Mian is frequently consumed on birthdays, along with longevity buns. Yi Mian is also called longevity noodles or shou mian/sau mein. While many believe that yi mian is associated with longetivity due to its length, there are other explanations as well. One would be the legend that long face (mian), or the length of groove between the upper lip and nose was indicative of livelong. Since then, people started to associate noodles with longevity. There are several customs of eating yi mian. For instance, guests have to pick their noodles from their own bowl and place it into the bowl of the host to wish them fortune, happiness and longevity.
